Florian Steiningers künstlerische Schwerpunkte liegen in der Musik der Moderne und dem Einsatz für die Aufführung selten gespielter Klaviermusik hauptsächlich aus dem 20. und 21. Jahrhundert.
Größere Projekte umfassen die zyklische Aufführung sämtlicher Klavierwerke von Morton Feldman, Olivier Messiaen und Wolfgang Rihm sowie die Edition und Aufführung von Kaikhosru Sorabjis dreistündiger »Toccata quarta«.
Im Bereich der Neuen Musik arbeitete er mit renommierten Komponisten zusammen, u.a. James Clarke, Christopher Fox, Morgan Hayes, Luke Styles, Lucia Ronchetti, Anno Schreier, Jörg Widmann und Wolfgang Rihm, dessen Klavierwerke er bei den Europäischen Kulturtagen in Karlsruhe und zuletzt beim Heidelberger Frühling präsentierte. 2024 zeigte er in Karlsruhe eine große Retrospektive mit mehr als 30 Klavierstücken Rihms innerhalb einer dreiteiligen Konzertreihe. Auf seiner ersten CD-Veröffentlichung mit Werken für Klavierduo sind Rihms »Über-Schrift« und Messiaens »Visions de l'Amen« zu hören. Jüngere Einspielungen umfassen einen Liederzyklus von Anno Schreier, produziert vom SWR. Mit der Aufführung von Messiaens monumentaler »Turangalîla-Sinfonie« unter Leitung von Steven Sloane und dem Orchester der HfM Karlsruhe gab er zugleich sein Orchesterdebüt.
Florian Steininger lebt seit 20 Jahren als freischaffender Künstler in Karlsruhe.

Florian Steininger focuses both on rarely played 20th century piano music and contemporary music. He is founder of a Karlsruhe based concert series which exclusively features that repertoire. Long term projects include the cyclical performances of the complete piano works of Morton Feldman, Olivier Messiaen and Wolfgang Rihm. Special attention gets the English composer Kaikhosru Sorabji, whose 3 hour work »Toccata quarta« Florian is editing and preparing for performance. He works with contemporary composers among them James Clarke, Christopher Fox, Morgan Hayes, Luke Styles, Lucia Ronchetti, Anno Schreier, Jörg Widmann and Wolfgang Rihm. Florian has presented Rihm's piano works at festivals Europäische Kulturtage Karlsruhe and Heidelberger Frühling and within a three-part concert series including over 30 of Rihm's piano pieces in 2024. Florian's first CD release with works for piano duo features Rihm's 'Über-Schrift' and Messiaen's 'Visions de l'Amen'. Florian gave his orchestral debut with Messiaen’s monumental Turangalîla-Symphony.

This is an overview about my ongoing project exploring and performing the entirety of Morton Feldman's works for piano solo and piano chamber music, including all unpublished and so far ineditied works as well. The idea was born, after I had played Triadic Memories on the occasion of my birthday in 2014. Thanks to the support of Paul Sacher Foundation and Chris Villars, I have been able not only to play most of the unpublished early piano works, but also to reconstruct the film music of a lost score to a documentary on sculptor Seymour Lipton and to identify another dance music for choreographer Merle Marsicano as a valid composition. The most recent discoveries in Feldman's manuscript collection include other pieces for dance and some occasional miniature compositions. Up to now I have played 52 individual works by Feldman in public.

This is an overview about my ongoing project exploring and performing the entirety of Wolfgang Rihm's works for piano solo. The inventory of Rihm's manuscripts at Paul Sacher Stiftung Basel counts about 80 individual entries among the works for piano solo, about half of them are sketches, exercises, earlier versions and unfinished works. However, among the unpublished works are several complete and important works both from Rihm's youth and mature periods. The following selection includes all pieces which I consider to qualify for the "complete" set of solo and duo piano works either through their official publication or their artistic autonomy among the unpublished works.
